Research Profile

Dr. Ali is Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Division of Geriatrics at UC San Diego.

Dr. Ali's research interests span an interdisciplinary area between chemistry and medicine.  Currently he is working on the development of new quantitative methods to approach the problem of free radical production by mitochondria and oxidative enzymes in relation to brain aging and psychological disorders.

He is also characterizing fullerene nano synzymes (synthetic enzymes) for their catalytic superoxide dismutase activities, and is carrying out molecular modeling of the interaction of fullerene derivatives with glutamate receptors.

Moreover, Dr. Ali is interested in the development of optical and spin probes for oxygen and superoxide imaging and in the technology of electrochemical nanobiosensors for subcellular detection of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide as well.
